Greetings Robert from the sunny, NC Coast....

Ah...that explains it, I wondered why you had unfollowed me a long time ago. I first I was hurt..and then angry...and then I realized it was all me...

I don't know the tool you speak of - I just do the legwork which is probably more time consuming than necessary. I put my favorites on a locked list and scroll through past comments, check their blogs, check who's commenting on their blogs and kind of social "stalk" them from afar. Then, and this is thanks to my photographic memory, I just remember who's streams to go back and check.

Occasionally I go to the main stream and engage with folks at random; this is how I meet new folks.

Hope things are great in Thailand -

Two things you could try...

First, Foller.me - http://foller.me/rdempsey. It shows you the top words used by a Twitter user (I linked to your profile so you could see if it is accurate or not. Of course, you have to go one by one.

Two, Paper.li. You don't have to tweet the paper if you don't want to, but you can create one based on you follow, a particular Twitter list, and so on. It will collect the top stories from the group of people you specify and put them in a daily paper. Might be a good way to get a daily glance at what the people you follow talk about.

Well that comment was completely unhelpful!

I'm not quite as fast and adept with technology tools like you are Robert. I've had a tendency to stick with the tools I figured out how to use - not the best way to go, but I do get some things done :)

Now that I understand your question and post better (duh) A tool like the one you speak of would be super helpful/ cool.

I stopped following people a couple years ago and basically get maybe 5 to 10 follows a day. From these I check out their social footprint, bio, etc. and follow or not. Maintaining and slowly growing the community is much more manageable this way.

A tool like the one you mention would be great too for identifying those people you would really like to connect with and you'd probably miss a lot less too :P

Let me know if you find a solution for this please :)

Robert, aloha. Sounds like a great tool and I hope that someone gives you the answer. Will be following this thread with interest.

While twitcleaner doesn't give you the info you want, it does at least tell you when a person last tweeted, if they just repeat the ssame URL at least 25% of the time, if they only tweet things like paper.li so perhaps it will be of some benefit to you.

None of those trending topics do it for me either. Enjoy a terrific day. Aloha. Janet

So glad I found this post... what a relief to occasionally escape SEO tyranny and just share myself, keyword free! I do it anyway, but since you are a big deal marketer and do it also, I feel much better about it!

It's been my experience that people really relate to the more personal posts. In my experience as a reader, a sense of really getting to know the blogger leads to more loyalty on my part, not less.

I've connected with many great people using the same method Mark. However as for analyzing what's going on within the group of people you follow, do you have any solutions for that? I just checked advanced Twitter search and didn't see any way to limit the search to people you are following.

Also that implies that you know what you're searching for in the first place. What if you simply want to see trends of what people within your group are talking about?

Hey Robert,

Yes, small steps do make huge differences. I have had several life experiences with that. Recently, when I was doing my writing challenge, I decided to change my position - stand up instead of sitting down comfortably in my chair. And it did make a huge difference!

Made me more productive and less stressful.

Anyways, thanks for the thoughts :D

Note: I especially like how you relate back this to your own experience - makes your post more interesting and a more informative.

Thanks,

Jeevan

Hey Robert,

Completely agree with you.

I didn't do much Search engine optimization for my old blog, but when I started my new one: I was seriously considering spending some time on SEO (and I did spent some time for optimizing my posts). But, as time passed on, I realized that I can't optimize everything. Yes, search engines are important but I primarily write for my readers, not for search engines.

Yes, we should care about SEO. But, like you said, it is okay if a few of our posts are not optimized for Search engines.

My opinion is that including personal stories and experiences make our posts unique (we blend in our personality into the posts) and entertaining to read - it also helps us to make the readers [more] loyal to our posts.

Anyways, thanks for the thoughts, Robert,

Awesome App, Robert!

I will be giving it a try (I usually don't keep checklists, but I will see how it works out).

Hey Robert,

It has been some time since I visited your blog. Good to be back :)

Awesome post :)

Yes, it is always better to aim for what you actually want to achieve and work hard towards it, rather than getting a 9-5 job just for the money and regretting the mistake all throughout your life.

Guess I should have waited a little before checking your Content Curation 101. But, that's alright. I liked your eBook :)

Anyways, thanks for the awesome post!

This is a great way to think about it without getting too deep into your goals. If you think about it, your goal is to build something that answers the answers to all these questions.

One thing I still see people get hung up on is what comes even before this and that is the question of 'do we need a website'. The answer is usually yes, but the priority of it is not always the highest. I think this is a huge mistake. People are finding answers onlien whether that's in the social forums or a search and if you dont have a website or yours is not something you would point people to, then you need to re-think your priorities.

Oh, this is so great!
I spend a lot of time optimizing and checking my posts via ScribeSEO, making sure that they're perfectly formatted for maximum SEO, blah blah blah.... UNTIL.... some of those all too rare days where I just want to throw something up there that's too short, too lacking in keywords, grossly lacking in links - just for the hell of it, and move on with my day.

If the entire world can't find that particular post on Google, will my world/my biz come to a crashing halt? Hmm. I think not. I might even get to bed earlier or have time to sing an extra song with my kids.

Tomorrow there will be plenty of time for another perfectly formatted and optimized post :)

Great question. Once you're logged in you only see your checklists. I'll be adding a filter this weekend so you can see all public checklists once you're logged in. Thanks Chuck!

The main sticking point is how a checklist is used compared to a to-do list. Not as many people use checklists.

I recently read an article where they said the only advantage one company can have over another is the experience they provide. I agree quite a bit with that statement. It's what makes something truly unique.

Hi Chuck - the first question to answer is if you need to use checklists. On the site I recommend an excellent book on the topic - The Checklist Manifesto. It talks about the use of checklists from surgery rooms to pre-flight.

The main difference between checklists and to-do's are that to-do's are ever changing. For example your daily list of things you need to get done is a to-do list.

A checklist on the other hand is something that doesn't change nearly as often. So for instance I created one for Blog SEO to help people check off all the SEO points on a blog post.

Definitely start with the book to see if checklists are for you.

And seriously, I think yur final comment about sweating the small stuff is what makes small business so much more competitive with the big names.

Absolutely on the mark!
Especially about providing a sizable preview. A big mistake I see a lot of people making is to give away a white paper or a guide about their product for free. Which would be great if they sold white papers or guides. The closer you can get to sharing the real experience the better.

I read to learn something, explore a topic that interests me, or to get to know the blogger better. I write to teach something, help my reader explore a topic that they might need to know and to allow people to know me better.
I use SEO and marketing to help me accomplish the above goals.
Thanks, Robert for helping us understand that we can have freedom and rankings.

I think it is important to remember that most of our readers don't comment. A lack of "visible" interaction on a post doesn't mean that people don't like it or relate to it.

There is value in mixing it up and showing some personality.

I have to say that the people reading my blog are reading because they want to more about what I am doing in the studio. They could care less about whether I was a marketing guru or if the SEO was optimized. And I care about what my current customers want/like, which also happens to be what prospective customers will also want.
I say more power to the personal aspects, but please don't tell me what you had for lunch every day.
Robert - I love how you incorporate personal stories in with your marketing ideas!

Which is why I said "not every" rather than "never" :)

As for unsubscribes, some people only want the "top 50 this" or "99 million resources for this" types of posts. That's okay. It's also okay if people unsubscribe.

There's a lot of people out there and if you're trying to get them all I'll argue that you have the wrong goal.

Hey Robert.

Thought provoking post.

I'm not so sure whether you should go with the idea that every post need not have a marketing goal. I mean, not many people would want to read about our personal life in our blog. if we have a business blog, then people usually come to it to solve problems or make things better for them.

Anyway I have tested this approach in a few of my older blogs and I have always seen that when we post personal content, interaction becomes almost zero at times. Also I have seen many people unsubscribing immediately after I share a personal post.

Very interesting Robert! This is something I considered doing on France ... I know that as an eternal expat, working overseas has it's oddities ... many don't realise - I know when were in Dubai many assumed that they could rely solely on English - yet all legal documents are in arabic, naturally.

Well, in France, good luck getting someone to speak English - they best I get from people is lines like "I'll be back" from English movies they've watched!

Can't wait for the next installment!

Many Americans I've spoken with that live here now say they were told that many people spoke English. They found out otherwise once they arrived.

Not sure who's making this stuff up. But it does truly depend on where you go.

Agreed on all counts. Visiting and living have two completely different sets of requirements.

As someone that has not traveled much, it is pretty awesome to hear about your experience and perspective!
I would guess that "English" is spoken in many of the touristy areas, but not where you would want to actually live. Even visting Los Angeles or New York, it is way better to have the perspective of a 'native' to tell you where to go and what to avoid. I would also think this is even more important if you are going to be living rather than just visiting.

I appreciate your candor outlining very valid considerations about "moving" your Business.
If your move is to another country the emphasis on Language is very important. "Americans" seem to have a egocentric viewpoint that "everyone" speaks English....

Hi Chuck - a checklist is a different than a to-do app. So with this application you might create a checklist for setting up the content curation theme.

I have set up an example blog post SEO checklist here - http://checklistapp.net/checklists/13

I must be a fossil...
I assume you keep adding "things to do" and check it often?
Or is this Just for smart Phone?
Can you show an example of a check list?
